Continuing Education Frequently Asked Questions
Will completing this course count towards required CEs needed for my mental health license?
Courses taught in Missio’s MA in Counseling (MAC) program are designed to meet the criteria for continuing education units as defined by Pennsylvania’s State Licensing Boards for Counselors and Psychologists. While the Seminary may seek specific approval for individual courses, any counseling-related course offered by Missio meets the standards set by the licensing boards given that (a) Missio is a regionally accredited graduate institution, and (b) the courses correspond to the scope and practice of counseling and psychology. Of course, prospective attendees are responsible to ensure that the course meets their particular requirements for continuing education.
Will I receive a certificate at the end of the course?
You will receive a certificate of completion of your CE provided that you attend the course in its entirety, complete the online CE Survey, notify the Academic Office that you have completed it (215.368.5000 x111), and provide an address for Missio to mail you a certificate. Most certificates are distributed within one week of the completion of the course. In addition, you may request an official transcript showing academic credits from the Academic Office by calling (215.368.5000 x111) or submit your request via the website.
What if I have questions, concerns, or complaints about the course I am taking?
Missio Graduate School of Counseling strives to offer the highest quality of continuing education. If you should have questions or concerns, you are encouraged to contact the Student Advancement office (215.368.5000, x106). We encourage students to voice concerns about course content first to their professor. In the unlikely event that you have a grievance, you should submit a written request to the Vice President of Student Advancement stating your name, course, and specific grievance. Should you not be satisfied with the response you receive, you have the right to appeal to the Academic Affairs Committee.
What if I wish to withdraw or otherwise desire a refund?
Full refunds may be requested from the Academic office up to one week prior to the course start date. Refunds for non‐attendance may be requested; however, penalties will apply.
Missio Seminary, Graduate School of Counseling, has been approved by NBCC as an Approved Continuing Education Provider (ACEP #4562). Programs that do not qualify for NBCC credit are clearly identified. Missio Seminary, Graduate School of Counseling is solely responsible for all aspects of the programs.
i Section 41.59(d)(3) of Pennsylvania’s State Board of Psychology regulations states the following, “The Board has approved the following sponsors: (i) Accredited colleges or universities as long as the course/program corresponds to the scope of practice of psychology and generates semester/quarter hour credit.” Pennsylvania’s State Board of Social Work, Marriage and Family Therapists, and Professional Counselors states the following (§49.36 (a)), “In addition to providers approved under §49.34 (relating to registration of continuing education providers who offer one course or program), the Board finds the following entities have currently met the standards in §49.35 (relating to standards for courses and programs). Accordingly, the following are approved providers: … (3) Accredited colleges and universities (graduate level courses and continuing education programs).

Counseling Licensure
Counseling Licensure
In order to achieve licensure as a Licensed Professional Counselor (LPC), counselors typically need to fulfill requirements in three areas: academic, national examination, and counseling hours.
How can the Graduate School of Counseling help?
Our 60-hour Master of Arts in Counseling (MAC) degree is designed for students who wish to pursue licensure in the Commonwealth of PA. In addition, many of the courses assist students and alumni in other states to also pursue licensure.
All classes and programs are available on-line. The majority of our on-line classes are in a synchronous format. This means that you can engage with your professors and classmates from the comfort of your own home! For more information please contact our admissions department here.
Want to Know More About Our Master of Arts in Counseling?
But a master’s degree doesn’t always fulfill the academic requirements. That is why Missio also has a Certificate in Advanced Professional Counseling (CAPC). The CAPC is a 10-credit/five-course certificate with courses in the five specific areas usually required by the states and tested on the licensing exam. Acceptance into the CAPC program is by application after completion of a master’s degree.

Requirements for Licensure
Please review the specific code requirements for the state in which you wish to obtain licensure. The information on this page is a helpful overview, but it cannot replace written state information. Go to your state’s website for complete information.
Academic:
Usually at least a 48-hour master’s degree in counseling or a counseling-related field is required, plus additional courses. For example, in Pennsylvania counselors need at least 60 academic credits (See PA Requirements). Requirements in other states vary.
Exam:
You will need to pass the National Counselor Exam (NCE) for licensure.
Counseling Hours:
Usually 3000 or more post-graduation counseling hours are required. In Pennsylvania the requirement is 3000 post-graduation hours.
Links to Surrounding States Licensure Requirements
Additional Licensure Notes:
CACREP Update from New Jersey:
On December 5th 2011 it was printed in the New Jersey Register that there will be an alternative to the CACREP requirement which was to go into effect October 2012. This means that you will not need to have graduated from a CACREP school to be eligible to apply for LPC in NJ. Please see this PDF for more info.
For Students Applying for Licensure in New York:
The NY State Education Department does not register as licensure-qualifying any programs that are offered by institutions outside of New York. Each individual who graduates from a program outside of New York must apply for licensure and then be individually evaluated to determine if the applicant has satisfied education requirements equivalent to a New York licensure-qualifying program.
The Bureau of Comparative Education will review the Form 2, transcript, course syllabi, and other information that is submitted directly by the college or university. The applicant will be notified if additional information is required or if additional education or an internship must be completed to meet the education requirements for licensure in New York.

Converting CCEF Credits
Christian Counseling and Educational Foundation
In order to achieve licensure as a Licensed Professional Counselor (LPC), counselors typically need to fulfill requirements in three areas: academic, national examination, and counseling hours.
Missio provides the opportunity for CCEF students to possibly convert their non-accredited CCEF credits to accredited credits.
“As we look more closely at life, it becomes clearer and clearer that Scripture is about counseling: diagnostic categories, causal explanations of behavior and emotion, interpretation of external sufferings and influences, definitions of workable solutions, character of the counselor, goals for the counseling process…These are all matters to which God speaks directly, specifically, and frequently. He calls us to listen attentively, to think hard and well, and to develop our practical theology of conversational ministry.”
– David Powlison Faculty and Executive Director, CCEF
How can CCEF accredited credits be used?
There are several ways to use your credits. (Please see the CCEF Credit Conversion Form for more details.)
Converted credits may be applied to several Missio degree programs including our Master of Arts in Counseling (pre-licensure program) and MA in Ministry Degree (with Counseling Concentration). They can also be used as electives towards completing a Master of Divinity or towards any other Master of Arts programs.
Can CCEF converted course credits fulfill state licensure requirements for the LPC?
Each state licensing board determines acceptance of course titles and course content. Missio cannot guarantee that converted CCEF courses or courses transferred from other accredited institutions will be accepted by state licensing boards. Converted CCEF courses and other courses transferred in appear on the Missio transcript with the original course title. The licensing board may request your CCEF course syllabi as well as any syllabi from other institutions. We recommend that you communicate directly with your state’s licensing board to ensure the acceptability of the courses. For more information on state licensure boards ACA State Professional Counselor Licensure Board webpage.
Steps to Convert CCEF Credits
Many CCEF courses may be transferred into our degree programs. Please follow the steps below and allow a decision to be made within one week of receiving your Credit Conversion Form and transcripts.

** 1 more credit will be needed since Missio’s course is 3 credits.
How do CCEF converted credits transfer into programs at other institutions?
CCEF converted credits are accredited credits that meet the qualifications for graduate-level education. These courses may be eligible for transfer to other graduate institutions. However, Missio does not guarantee that converted credits will be accepted by another institution. Every institution sets their own policies regarding the transfer of courses into their degree programs. It is the student’s responsibility to investigate transfer credit policies with the institution.

Certificate in Advanced Professional Counseling
Certificate in Advanced Professional Counseling
The Certificate in Advanced Professional Counseling (CAPC) is designed for any student with a completed master’s-level degree in counseling who desires to pursue licensure and is in need of more credits or courses. Prospective students must have a completed MA in Counseling with a minimum grade point average of 3.0. Any person seeking entry into the CAPC must also complete an application that includes an official transcript from an accredited graduate institution. See application for more information.
Application for this certificate is open each term. Please apply using our online application system, or the forms linked on this page.
The design of [Missio’s] Certificate in Advanced Counseling program allows exposure to a variety of counseling topics, with a focus on practical application and higher-order thinking skills. I’m really impressed by the dedication and care for the students, and the way instructors shepherd to teach shepherding, and counsel to teach counseling.
– Beiye Gu CAPC, 2013
All classes and programs are available on-line. The majority of our on-line classes are in a synchronous format. This means that you can engage with your professors and classmates from the comfort of your own home! For more information please contact our admissions department here.
What's Required?
The primary license for master’s-level counselors in the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania is the Licensed Professional Counselor (LPC) credential (enacted in 1998). To obtain this license, individuals need to complete 60 graduate hours in a counseling-related program of study and 3000 hours of supervised postgraduate work, and pass a national counseling exam. Details can be found on our Licensure page.
Please note that the practice and testing requirements for licensure will be the student’s responsibility after graduation. While Missio makes every effort to stay abreast of licensing changes, our primary goal is to train and educate wise, godly counselors for kingdom work. Those seeking licensure in their jurisdiction need to take personal responsibility to ensure that Missio’s program meets their needs.
See how the Missio Graduate School of Counseling can help with obtaining licensure in other states:
Additional Requirements for Students Needing Fieldwork Hours:
Should prospective CAPC students also need to enroll in Missio’s fieldwork courses and complete the requisite practicum and internship experiences (i.e., MAC 520, 600, and 610), they will need to provide the following to their admissions counselor:
1. Evidence of completion of a course equivalent
Evidence of completion of a course equivalent to MAC510 Helping Relationships and MAC525A Ethics and Professional Orientation. If you have not taken an equivalent course, you will be required to take it at Missio prior to starting fieldwork.
2. Full-session Video
A full-session video exhibiting your counseling skills. You and your counselee must complete this Video Consent and Evaluation Form and submit it with the video. Please submit the video on a DVD or USB drive.
3. Written Reference from Faculty Member
A written reference by a counseling faculty member from your graduate institution explaining why you did not complete fieldwork at this institution (e.g., none available) and that the faculty member would heartily endorse you as fit for clinical practice. This is in addition to the Academic/Professional Reference Form included in the CAPC application.
4. Background Checks
Criminal and child abuse background checks for your state will need to be submitted. Click here to review the guidelines.
5. Obtain Liability Insurance
Obtain liability insurance (1mil/1mil) or provide a copy of your current personal liability insurance. If you need liability insurance click here and apply for either mental health counselor or clergy/pastoral counselor (your preference based on population you are counseling).
6. Complete an Interview
Complete an interview with the Graduate School of Counseling (Admissions will arrange this for you).
The counseling department may require a live mock counseling session (done with the director) to evaluate further your readiness for fieldwork. Those students with skill deficits may first be required to take MAC510 prior to enrollment in MAC520, 600, and/or 610. Those students accepted into these courses recognize that Missio does not guarantee field placements. All students are responsible for procuring field sites meeting Missio’s minimum criteria.
7. After Acceptance
Once you are accepted into CAPC-Fieldwork you will need to complete internship paperwork. No one is permitted to start accruing hours or start the Fieldwork courses until paperwork is submitted and approved by the MAC Fieldwork Coordinator. You can email the Fieldwork Coordinator for more information.

If you are looking for graduate-level training to equip you with counseling skills but are not sure you want our full MA in Counseling (MAC) degree, then this certificate program may be just what you are looking for. Courses within the certificate program will emphasize helping/counseling skills, an understanding of a broad range of human struggles, and how we grow and change.

Master of Arts in Counseling
Master of Arts in Counseling (MAC)
Our MAC students are those who are drawn to walk alongside hurting people, seeking to be conduits of God’s healing to emotional and relational brokenness. Missio prepares them to skillfully apply the grace and truth of the Gospel first to their lives and then to those of their counselees.
At our Philadelphia campus, MAC students come to class one night a week, one Saturday a month, for three years and learn to engage science and culture from a Christian perspective, with wisdom and discernment. Students are equipped for professional and non-professional counseling contexts, as they learn effective evidence-based counseling skills from faculty who are practicing clinical counselors. The MAC program is tailored to Pennsylvania state licensure requirements.
What do our graduates do with their degree?
The MAC program trains Christians for a broad spectrum of service. Missio’s Graduate School of Counseling program meets the needs of students in a variety of career and avocational settings. MAC graduates serve on pastoral teams or in counseling ministries in their local churches, in social service and mental health organizations, in para-church ministries, in specialized counseling services, and more. MAC’s curriculum is designed to provide students with the knowledge, skills, and self-awareness needed for effective, Christ-centered counseling. Courses, retreats, and fieldwork experiences address key professional counseling areas of study while maintaining a biblical and ministry focus.
How can the MAC program benefit you?
At Missio, the cohort model is a powerful delivery format for professional development because it taps into students’ prior life experiences, it is collaborative, and it occurs over a period of three years. Because students move through the program together, the quality of learning from one course to another is enhanced. Cohorts develop strong communication skills as students sharpen and challenge each other. This dynamic learning community produces the kind of deep learning, authentic contextualization, and relational wisdom that missional leaders need today.
Students will also embrace spiritual formation through participation in retreats, and share their internship experiences throughout their time in the program.

Why choose Missio for my counseling degree?
Missio’s Master of Arts in Counseling program is tailored to assist in preparing you for the helping field, whether it is your career/ministry or your avocation/ministry. You will be learning from faculty who actively counsel and bring that expertise to the classroom. MAC faculty are passionate about training men and women to counsel others with “wise counsel.” You will be learning alongside others who desire to bring their faith commitments to counseling in a way that helps people in their life struggles and points them to Christ.
We also now have two options for obtaining your degree in counseling. The first is our 3-year program that provides all the core counseling classes and degree completion requirements that will lead directly into obtaining licensure. Our second option is the traditional 2-year program that will lead to a Master in Counseling degree.

Program Offerings
Thinking about pursuing a seminary education to strengthen your ministry? By working with Kairos University, Missio offers many learning opportunities.
Masters and Doctoral Program Options
Master of Arts
The Master of Arts program, in partnership with Kairos University, is for students who desire to gain a deeper understanding of the Christian faith while developing expertise in a chosen area of specialization.
Some commonly chosen areas of focus include missional theology, biblical studies, leadership, intercultural studies, theology, spiritual formation, and more. By starting with the classic theological disciplines, students work with their mentor teams to craft a program of study that helps them understand what God is doing in the world and then develop vocational expertise informed by that understanding.
Master of Divinity
The Master of Divinity is the foundational degree for Christian vocation. The curriculum supports students as they learn and grow in love for the missional character of God and develop into leaders who shepherd God’s people in His global Kingdom mission within each community’s distinct context.
During your MDiv studies, you will be ever mindful of this rich, Gospel-shaped vision as you study the church, conscious that you do so as one small part of a global community that God’s Spirit has cultivated.
Doctor of Ministry
Are you engaged in ministry and looking for ways to equip yourself with the skills needed to continue reaching your community? Missio offers advanced studies, through our partnership with Kairos University, that train men and women to become practical, advanced missional leaders in their churches and ministries. Regardless of whether you are in ministry professionally or as a lay leader, the DMin program will help you obtain a robust knowledge of theology and culture along with the tools to gain the wisdom to become an effective leader.
Whether you are looking to develop a theology of cities based on Scripture, reinvigorate an established church or organization, or learn to interpret Scripture in a way that leads to effective communication, the Doctor of Ministry program will help you grow in your ministry competence.

Audit Any Class
Who Can Audit?
Missio encourages everyone to take advantage of the wide range of courses offered at the seminary. Most individuals enroll for academic credit in pursuit of a degree program. An auditor is extended the opportunity to enroll in classes for personal enrichment without receiving academic credit, as space allows.
The level of participation by an auditing student is determined by the instructor. The auditing student may complete assignments and take any tests given to the class, but faculty members will not grade this work or provide any feedback. Students who are not pursuing a degree may audit a class after completing a non-degree application from the Admission Office.
Audit fees vary per program and can be obtained from the student development department or Business Office. There is no refund for dropped audits once the class has begun. Students may sign up to audit a class at any point in the term (the audit fee remains the same). Those who wish to change from audit to credit must do so before the end of the first week of classes. In addition, advanced standing will not be granted for any course previously audited. Students who have passed a course at Missio may audit the same class at no charge.
Auditors do not need to complete out of class assignments and will not receive a grade for the course. Audited courses would not be eligible for transfer into any program at Missio since auditors are not matriculated students.
Audit Classes and Financial Aid
There are three important things to know about auditing courses in relation to Financial Aid:
(1) If Missio requires a student to audit a course for which they transferred in credits, there is no charge for the audit. If the student chooses to audit a course for which they’ve already received credit, the student will be required to pay the audit fee (1/3 of full tuition).
(2) Church Match program and Missio discounts/grants do not apply to audit courses (ex. MAC Grant, Referral/Alumni discount, etc.).
(3) Church Match programs apply only to Missio credits for a specific degree program.
Classes Available for Auditing
All classes are available for auditing, with the following exceptions:
– MAC courses delivered in a cohort format
– Advanced professional counseling courses
– Greek and Hebrew language courses, unless the specific course has already been completed for credit

Certificate in Missional Theology
Certificate in Missional Theology
God has communicated in His own Word that He created the universe and the people in it with a purpose. God has existed in three Persons from eternity past in perfect harmony, with no need of anything or anyone more for Him to be “happy and satisfied.”
Nevertheless, He chose to create anyway, creating beings unlike Himself, so He could share the joy and love of the harmony the Three Persons of the Trinity had already been enjoying from eternity. And, even when that creation rebelled and corrupted itself, He did not crush it and start over (though He justly could have); nor did He simply sit back and demand the glory due Him. No, He reached out, and pursued – as on a mission. How far did that mission take Him? Even to brutal death at the hands of creatures He could have easily snuffed out even as they cursed Him and spit on Him. . . .
Everything about God has to be understood within the context of that unfolding drama.
Missional Theology is a vital way in which we, at Missio Seminary, help teach, train, and guide our students to engage the culture and participate in the mission of God. We seek a posture of generous orthodoxy in which we train in the essentials that have been affirmed by the church throughout time. God has created the universe and the people in it for a purpose. It is our belief that through missional theology we can work together for this greater purpose of God to engage and impact the culture.
Our entire curriculum is used to train in missional leadership, understand God’s Word from a Christotelic perspective, and instruct in a way that encourages students to go and be the message of God to a hurting culture. Our approach to theology is practical and will equip you for real-life ministry.
Who is this Certificate for?
Anyone who wants to study the Word of God is welcome. Students will grow in their knowledge of the Bible and its missional perspective and in their ability to humbly interpret and apply it in light of history, culture, and genre.
The Certificate in Missional Theology was created to assist missional Christians who desire to enhance their awareness of how they are a part of the mission of God to bring righteousness, justice, and peace to those they serve.
What is the Missio Seminary Advantage?
This certificate program offers courses that are taught for application to ministry. It offers each student the opportunity to interact and dialogue with both faculty and fellow students in the program, enhancing both intellectual and vocational growth.
