The goal is to expose the seminarian to real-life field work, better preparing you for the future calling of God on your life.

About Manoa Community Church

The vision of Manoa Community Church (manoa.org) is to saturate Haverford Township, the Main Line, Philadelphia, and the ends of the earth with the glorious Gospel of Jesus Christ. Our mission is multiplying missional Christians and churches throughout Greater Philadelphia and the unreached world. Our strategy includes training and sending laborers, locally and globally, to revitalize and plant churches. We aim to raise up future church leaders, like yourself, and release them into fruitful Great Commission work.

  • Godly Christian character, consistent with the biblical qualifications of an elder.
  • Receiving mentorship from the Pastor weekly.
  • Attending weekly staff meetings on Mondays, as able.

Ministry Apprenticeship Program

About the Ministry Apprentice Program

The New Life Ministry Apprentice Program (MAP) is designed to supplement your seminary experience at Missio with practical ministry experience and discipleship at New Life Church. Candidates chosen for the program will receive a 20% discount on all classes at Missio, tuition assistance for up to 30 credit hours annually (details below), pastoral discipleship, and ministry and leadership opportunities. New Life desires to be an integral partner in the formation of dynamic next-generation leaders for the Kingdom of God. We are looking for highly motivated men and women who have a calling to serve the church in an urban multi-ethnic setting.

About New Life Church

New Life Church (www.newlifephilly.net) is an urban multi-ethnic church with a vision to reach one of the most diverse communities in Philadelphia with the gospel of Jesus Christ. New Life is looking to disciple and train next generation leaders to reach our diverse neighborhood which is approximately 57% African American, 22% Hispanic, 15% Asian, and 4% White. New Life is in the process of changing from a predominantly White church (currently about 70% White) to a church that more closely mirrors its community in both church leadership and ultimately in the makeup of the congregation. New Life is committed to robust discipleship, is active in world missions, and has a vision to raise up leaders to plant more urban churches.

MAP Requirements

  • Godly character which is consistent with biblical qualifications for an elder (1 Timothy 3:1-8).
  • A passion for Jesus and personal growth in being formed into his image (John 15:1-11).
  • Skill, desire, and a strong calling to be a part of a team dedicated to making disciples for Jesus in a multi-ethnic environment (Acts 13:1-3).
  • Becoming a fully integrated member of the diverse church family at New Life for the duration of the internship (Ephesians 2:11-22).
  • Working a minimum of 10 hours per week in specific areas designed to help you grow in ministry skills and meet pressing needs at the church.
  • Weekly discipleship meetings with a Pastor.
  • Receiving an interview and evaluation after each semester. Either party may decide to end the internship without penalty during this process.  New Life’s hope is to have interns who serve the entire year and potentially continue beyond that time frame.

Financial Assistance

Students will receive a $1,000 monthly stipend for their ministry work at New Life. This is contingent upon students being enrolled in full-time classes at Missio (at least 12 hours per semester). Students are expected to maintain a 3.0 GPA or higher. According to the IRS up to $5,250 per year or 20% of their yearly tuition payment (whichever is lower) can be paid as educational assistance benefits and therefore are not taxable. Tuition payments will be made directly to Missio by New Life with the remaining amount of the stipend will be paid to the student.

Federal Student Loans

Guide to Applying for Federal Student Loans

Unsubsidized (non-need based) loans through the William D. Ford Direct Loan Program are available to eligible graduate students up to $20,500 in Stafford Loans per year. The Cost of Attendance determines how much a student may be entitled to during a given period. Need is determined by the federal government through the FAFSA process.

All student loans must be repaid.

Based on a student’s Cost of Attendance the student may be eligible to apply for Grad Plus loans. These loans require a separate application and a credit history report will be pulled. A student will be accepted or denied based on this report.

Missio Federal Student Loan Process

The Federal Student Aid website is a comprehensive source of information about the U.S. Department of Education federal student aid programs and includes an overview of federal student aid, as well as more detailed information on the application process and student loans.

Whatever your questions, you’ll find the aid information you need here.

Steps to complete

  1. Complete the “Free Application for Federal Student Aid” (FAFSA) online at fafsa.ed.gov. Missio’s school code is G23230.
  2. Complete Entrance Counseling – Go to studentloans.gov/myDirectLoan/index.action, sign-in, select “Complete Counseling,” and then select “Entrance Counseling.” All first-time Missio student loan borrowers are required to complete this step.
  3. Complete Master Promissory Note – Go to studentloans.gov/myDirectLoan/index.action, sign-in, select “Complete Master Promissory Note,” and then select “Subsidized/Unsubsidized.” Master Promissory Notes are valid for ten years. If you have had student loans through the Department of Education within the last ten years, you may have already completed this requirement.
  4. Read the Financial Aid Handbook and the PowerPoint summary, “Understanding Federal Direct Loans.” You are responsible to know the detailed information provided in the Financial Aid Handbook.
  5. Notify the Missio Financial Aid Office when you have completed these steps.

Maintaining Eligibility for Federal Student Loans

Determining financial aid eligibility is the joint responsibility of the federal government and the school. The Financial Aid administrator is responsible for adhering to and monitoring eligibility requirements.

Eligibility Requirements

  • Students must meet specific citizenship requirements.
  • Students must not be in default on prior student loans.
  • Students must be enrolled in a degree program with a minimum half-time student status (5 credit hours per term).
  • Students must complete online “Entrance Counseling” and a “Master Promissory Note.”
  • Students must make Satisfactory Academic Progress (SAP), which means maintaining a 2.0 GPA or higher and progressing towards their degree at a satisfactory pace.

If you have any other questions regarding the application process for Federal Student Loans, please feel free to contact the Financial Aid office or any admissions counselor.

Financial Aid Assistance

Financial Assistance at Missio

In these difficult times, affording a quality higher education degree can be the determining factor on which institution is selected. Missio’s Financial Aid Office has one simple goal: provide current and prospective students with the best possible assistance to facilitate their education goals at Missio.

Our students receive awards, scholarships, and grants from a wide variety of sources. Before applying for financial aid, students need to supply their financial obligations through personal funds saved for education and by building a personal support network. A personal support network may include the student’s home church, denomination, people to whom the student has ministered, friends, family, clubs, and foundations.

We also believe that no qualified student should be discouraged from pursuing seminary for merely financial reasons. We have established the financial aid program to supplement students’ own financial resources.

A Missio Grant Application is required when applying for any need-based grant from Missio.

Missio is accredited by the Middle States Association and by the Association of Theological Schools in the United States and Canada. If you have any questions regarding our degree and non-degree programs, feel free to contact our helpful admissions department. They will be able to assist you.

Different Forms of Financial Aid

Financial Aid can take on many forms through your term as a student. Financial Aid is available for students enrolled in degree earning programs only. Courses taken in Certificate Programs are not eligible for financial aid. If you have any questions regarding the steps to complete financial aid or any of the programs listed below, do not hesitate to contact Kim Billups.

Grants

Students with a demonstrated financial need who are enrolled in a degree program for at least 24 credit hours per year may be eligible for a grant. Not available for International Students.

Scholarships

From time to time scholarships become available which are awarded by the Financial Aid Committee. Our finance committee reviews current student files and recommends qualifying students for special scholarships. Click here to view the most current list of available scholarships.

Veterans Benefits

As an accredited school, Missio is recognized by the Veterans Administration. To determine eligibility, students should contact a regional VA office. Missio’s facilities code is 31015238.

Below is a list of websites that offer helpful information for veterans seeking benefits:

Church Match Program

For full-time, degree-program students whose churches want to support their education throughout the entirety of their degree, Missio will match the church’s sponsorship up to 25% of tuition costs. Your church officials will be required to complete a Promissory Note acknowledging the amount of their support and how they intend to pay. Missio will match the church’s payment once it has been received, up to the maximum of 25% of the tuition total, provided you keep your account current with your portion of payment.

Auditing and Financial Aid

(1) If Missio requires a student to audit a course for which they transferred in credits, there is no charge for the audit. If the student chooses to audit a course for which they’ve already received credit, the student will be required to pay the audit fee (1/3 of full tuition).

(2) Church Match program and Missio discounts/grants do not apply to audit courses (ex. MAC Grant, Referral/Alumni discount, etc.).

(3) Church Match programs apply only to Missio credits for a specific degree program.

Here is How Missio's Financial Aid can Help You Afford Seminary

  • Missio need-based grants (full-time only, grant application required); not available for International Students

The missionary discount applies to courses taken towards a degree program and does not include certificate courses.
