Certificate in Biblical Studies
Certificate in Biblical Studies
Connecting with God’s vision and purpose through the study of His Word is a rewarding endeavor. Delving deeper into the Bible raises an awareness of the passion Jesus had for all of us, a passion that will often leave the reader asking more questions.
In the end, a deeper knowledge of His mission throughout the Scriptures generates an intense passion to learn more.
Biblical studies is the in-depth look at the message of the whole Bible, including its original language, context, and overall mission and purpose. At Missio we teach that the entire Bible points to Jesus Christ and His mission. From the Old Testament to the New Testament we see the writers pointing to Christ and instructing us in the mission of God.
Through our Certificate in Biblical Studies program we teach students to keep Christ at the center of ministry. We seek to inspire them to do ministry in creative and unique ways that will engage their community. We hope to sharpen and focus the vision of churches to be about and for the work of Christ.
Who is this Certificate for?
Anyone who wants to study the Word of God is welcome. Students will grow in their knowledge of the Bible and its missional perspective and in their ability to humbly interpret and apply it in light of history, culture, and genre.
The Certificate in Biblical Studies program was designed for students who desire seminary-level education but who are not pursuing a degree. This program is an excellent way to strengthen your biblical foundation for Christian life and ministry.
What is the Missio Seminary Advantage?
This certificate program meets the requirements of many mission boards for candidates who have not had formal biblical education, and Christian school teachers needing continuing education. The program also provides an opportunity for spouses of students in degree programs to pursue biblical studies without pursuing a full degree.
All classes and programs are available on-line. The majority of our on-line classes are in a synchronous format. This means that you can engage with your professors and classmates from the comfort of your own home! For more information please contact our admissions department here.
Are there any specific requirements?
The certificate program requires a completed undergraduate degree, and completion of a degree application. Upon completion students may transfer appropriate completed certificate courses into a degree program.

In Defense of Missional Theology: A Response to Mark Galli
July 18, 2019
Mark Galli, editor-in-chief of Christianity Today, has devoted a four-part series in Christianity Today to critiquing missional theology and evangelicalism’s embrace of the missional purpose of the church: see 1) https://www.christianitytoday.com/ct/2019/june-web-only/unfortunate-pedigree-of-missional-church.html; 2) https://www.christianitytoday.com/ct/2019/june-web-only/church-does-not-exist-for-sake-of-world.html; 3) https://www.christianitytoday.com/ct/2019/june-web-only/purpose-of-world-to-become-church.html; 4) https://www.christianitytoday.com/ct/2019/june-web-only/churchs-sickness-unto-death.html. Christianity Today has a well-earned reputation as being the publication of centrist evangelicalism (founded, as it is, by evangelical pillars Billy Graham and Carl F. H. Henry); and Mark Galli, its current editor-in-chief, has a well-earned reputation for level-headed, irenic analysis.
New Perspective(s) On Paul
April 11, 2019
Hot off the press and well worth the read is this book that does a masterful job of laying out the topography of “perspectives” on Paul and illustrating (with sample sermonettes) the difference the various perspectives make in preaching (and applying) “the real point(s)” of Romans.

Advanced Cultural Studies
Advanced Cultural Studies
The ACS program is for any student desiring a theological education whose primary language is not English, no matter where he or she is from. Typical English language training can fall short of equipping students for graduate-level ministry study. Students face many issues in moving to a strange land with confusing customs and little access to the help they need.
Advanced Cultural Studies is designed to provide instruction for graduate-level students in need of focused academic training in the English language, cultural awareness, and theological terminology in addition to regular program courses at Missio.
All classes and programs are available on-line. The majority of our on-line classes are in a synchronous format. This means that you can engage with your professors and classmates from the comfort of your own home! For more information please contact our admissions department here.
To schedule an appointment or for more information please contact Dr. Chang Hoon Oh at coh@missio.edu or call 215-368-5000.

Pre-Doctoral Program
Pre-Doctoral Program
Providing a Pathway for All Students
The Missio Pre-Doctoral Program provides a pathway for students who have achieved a master’s-level graduate degree in a non-theological area of study that will facilitate a Master of Divinity equivalency.
The program also provides a way for those who have not yet completed a graduate-level degree in theological study. Upon completion of the required courses a student may receive a Certificate in Ministerial Studies or achieve a Master of Arts degree depending on the prior level of study and the student’s particular circumstances.
All classes and programs are available on-line. The majority of our on-line classes are in a synchronous format. This means that you can engage with your professors and classmates from the comfort of your own home! For more information please contact our admissions department here
Requirements of the Program
Students who apply to the Doctor of Ministry program must have an MDiv or its equivalent from an accredited institution and three years of ministry experience subsequent to the first theological degree.
Students who are interested in the DMin program and who have a graduate degree but not a Master of Divinity degree may qualify for the Doctor of Ministry degree by completing a pre-doctoral course of study. MDiv equivalency is defined as broad-based work in theology, biblical studies, and the arts of ministry that includes a Master’s degree and significant ministerial leadership.
Professors push us to be critical about our theological assumptions and to work at understanding the Bible. Other strengths: Missional thrust, Christotelic hermeneutics, holistic counseling program, vision for urban ministry, robust integration of spiritual formation, etc. Maybe the most important note: I’ve found that each of the professors I’ve had make a huge effort to be accessible, to actively admit their flaws, and to be missional themselves beyond their seminary duties. Christ is at work in this institution.
– Jeremy Chen DMin Candidate, 2016

Additional Possible Requirements
Students who need to make up more credits to reach the 72 hour minimum for equivalency may take elective courses based on their areas of need or anticipated concentration in the DMin program. The Academic Office and Student Advancement Office may also recommend courses based on student transcripts.
Students have the option to receive a Pre-doctoral Certificate in Ministerial Studies once they complete their pre-doctoral course requirements (minimum of 18 credits required).

The Remissioning Track in MAMM is a partnership between Missio and the V3 Movement (thev3movement.org). It is intended for church leaders who are seeking an MA degree specializing in formation for remissioning established or traditional congregations. The Track’s main feature is a 2-year cohort experience that offers advanced standing of 9 credit hours towards the MA program. The weekly virtual cohort meetings will be led by a team of V3 coaches who have experience in leadership formation in community and in remissioning churches.
This V3 track is aimed at helping leaders recalibrate their church around missional presence, learn how to make cruciform-shaped disciples, tackle old policies and outdated procedures, and honor the past while innovating towards the future. The V3 Remissioning Cohort will help leaders and their church to bear new fruit and live on mission.
Cohort Details:
• Meet for a coaching call each week (with breaks around the holidays/semester break)
• Coaching calls last between 1-1.5 hours
• Pre-coaching call work is assigned weekly that takes between 30 minutes to an hour and includes: reading, reflection questions, videos, etc.
• Cohorts are 4-10 students to give each remissioning leader time to process with coach and group-specific challenges.
• Cohort ends with creating both a short-term (6-12 month) and long-term (1-3 years) prospectus that should be used in leadership gatherings at the church.
• Final papers will be assigned to integrate theological reflection, readings, learning from peers, and practical tools explored in the cohort.
Cohort Topics Include:
Spirituality of Weakness – leadership that acknowledges limits and habits of the cross that can lead to resurrection. Learning to be a disciple before making disciples.
Creative Destruction – Learning how to put the narrative of life, death and resurrection into real-time practice.
Cultural Assessment – Identifying the gaps and resources of a current established community. Charting a strategic path over the gap into the landscape of transformation.
Purposeful Pruning – Recognizing that every event, ritual, program and tradition ultimately shapes a church’s mission. Discover thoughtful habits of pruning so that a gathering of people can bear good fruit again.
Traditioned Innovation – Holding the past and future in creative tension and learning to live more fully in the present activity of God.
Ecclessial Architecture – Organizing your teams, groups and committees around a framework of movemental discipleship rather than duties for service.
Shared Experiments – Utilizing time bound experiments as pathways into neighboring, missional living and new ways of leading.
