Most of us go into ministry to see people transformed by the gospel. Sadly, the reality is that many people who come to Christian services and programs don’t actually change much. While the problem is no doubt complex, one aspect is the way we teach. The church tends to over-utilize lecture, sermon, and other podium-centered styles of communication in the development Christ followers. In contrast Jesus’ ministry engaged people’s whole lives. Dallas Willard writes in The Great Omission, that what God wants to do in our lives is not passively received. Instead it “is claimed and put into action by our active, intelligent pursuit of it.” Educational research has demonstrated that people, especially adults, learn best when they are actively involved in the learning process. Because of this understanding, universities, colleges, trade, and professional schools utilize internships, service learning, labs, and practicums. In this course we will apply both Jesus’ model and educational theories to the context of our ministries, to help us foster more active and transformative learning.
